A joint authority, maybe a new owner

East Berlin Borough says the East Berlin Area Joint Authority was created in 2007 to run the water and sewer systems. The Gettysburg Times reported that the authority board decided to solicit bids to sell the water and wastewater systems. Whoever owns the plant, the private lateral from the main to your house stays the owner's responsibility, so a clogged lateral is still a plumber call.

A trunk sewer instead of a 50-year-old pump station

Engineering firm Buchart Horn describes a sewage project for the authority in which a new 4,000-foot Northwest Trunk Sewer allowed it to retire the 50-year-old West King Street Pump Station. Gravity lines are less likely to fail than old pumps. Inside the house, though, the pipes are as old as the house.

Homes

An older borough on the Conewago

The typical East Berlin home dates to 1955, by Census estimates. About 37% were built before 1940 and about 55% before 1960. Old cast iron stacks and clay laterals are common in homes that age. If more than one drain is slow, or the toilet gurgles when the tub drains, the clog is likely in the main house line, not one fixture.

Before the Plumber Arrives in East Berlin

Skip the chemical drain cleaner. It can splash back and it can't clear a main line.

  • Stop running water if more than one drain is backing up.
  • Don't pour chemical cleaner into standing water. It can splash back when the plumber opens the line.
  • If you know where the cleanout is, clear the area around it.
  • Keep children and pets away from dirty water.
